Three days before their World Cup opener, France’s star striker Karim Benzema was forced to leave a training session due to an injury, according to L’Equipe. This could be a major setback for the defending champions.
The first practise with the group since arriving in Qatar was held on Saturday. The Ballon d’Or winner, who has been dealing with a muscle issue, and centre back Raphael Varane, who is recovering from a knee problem, both participated.
According to L’Equipe, Benzema was injured, the nature and extent of which have not yet been determined, and was unable to finish the session.
France begins their tournament against Australia in Group D play despite already being without key midfielders Paul Pogba and N’Golo Kante due to injury.
